Our 7 Congos Protection and Prosperity Lamp is crafted to support protection, financial growth, business success, abundance, luck, and spiritual guidance. Each lamp is prepared with sacred herbs, oils, roots, and curios aligned with the 7 Congos, empowering it to address matters within their domain. Traditionally, practitioners work a 7 Congos lamp throughout a career, during business endeavors, or when facing important challenges. This lamp burns hotter than a standard 7-day candle, allowing it to work with greater speed and intensity. We tend this lamp for approximately seven days, offering daily prayers and petitions until the work is complete.

The concept of working with Los Siete Congos arises primarily from a Newyorican reinterpretation of Afro-Caribbean spiritualities, particularly a form of Santerismo that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s in New York. Santerismo originated as a fusion of Puerto Rican Espiritismo (Spiritualism) and elements of Orisha veneration, practiced outside the formalized ritual structure of Lucumí (also known as Santería or Regla de Ocha). Santerismo began to gain prominence within the Puerto Rican community of New York City during the 1950s, following the release of Celina González’s 1948 song “¡Que Viva Changó!”

It is essential to emphasize that Santerismo is not synonymous with Santería. Santerismo functions as a spiritualist practice that embraces personal revelation and mediumship, while Santería is a structured, initiatory religion rooted in West African Yoruba traditions, governed by a strict liturgical and ritual order. Although the term Seven African Powers appears in both traditions, its interpretation varies significantly. In Santería, this term typically refers to a group of spirits of the dead—ancestral guides—rather than to the Orishas themselves. However, within the Santerismo context, this distinction was often misunderstood, leading practitioners to conflate these spiritual entities with the Orishas.

Within this adaptation, the Siete Congos serve as a counterpart to the Siete Orishas or Siete Potencias Africanas popularized during that era. In doing so, names derived from Mpungo in Palo Mayombe were substituted for the Orishas, e.g., Mama Chola with Oshun. However, this substitution is problematic: the Mpungo of Palo bear little resemblance—structurally, ritually, or theologically—to the Orishas, despite contemporary attempts to draw parallels.

We work with Los Siete Congos as spirits of the dead representing seven distinct African ethnic groups that were forcibly brought to Cuba during the transatlantic slave trade. Individuals may interact with the Congo spirits recognized within Espiritismo, such as La Madama, Ta Francisco, Ma Francisca, La Negra Tomasa, Ta Juan, Ta Julian, Ta José, Ma Rufina, Ma Juana, and others. These are understood as ancestral spirits—specifically, spirits of deceased individuals of Congo origin or descent—rather than Mpungo.
