The Beef Tongue Binding is a traditional sour working found within Cyprianic folk-magic traditions, employed when malicious gossip, slander, or persistent talk is interfering with your reputation, relationships, family, employment, or peace.

The tongue serves as the physical representation of the person whose words are causing harm. Through a combination of souring, burning, binding, and pinning symbolism, the working is designed to silence harmful speech, restrain gossip, and prevent the continued spread of damaging words.

The tongue is opened, the name is placed within it alongside the souring and heating ingredients, and the opening is sewn closed with black thread while Saint Cyprian is petitioned to close the person’s mouth against speaking your name. Black pins or iron nails are then driven into the tongue as a symbolic means of pinning down their words and stopping their ability to continue spreading them.

The completed working is traditionally placed in a secluded location at a cemetery.
